JKMuir, a successful women-owned and operated engineering and energy consulting firm, is celebrating Engineers Week by allowing Empowering Pumps to highlight their most talented engineering professionals. We had the great honor of talking with several members of the JKMuir team, including Jessica Dzwonkoski, Project Engineer with JKMuir. This is what she had to share:
Q. How did you decide to become an engineer? What inspired you?
Jessica: I have always enjoyed building and taking things apart. As a child, I was always digging in the dirt, building forts out of snow, and building with Legos. I remember when it would rain, I would gather my Tonka Trucks, go out into the driveway and dam up the running water. My father was always supportive of me destroying the driveway (::chuckles::).
Q. What do you love most about being an engineer?
Jessica: I love being able to solve problems – especially being out in the field. I like taking an issue that does not have a clear definitive answer and being able to offer an “engineered” solution. This is something that is not taught in school, nothing you learn from a book, but something that you gather with experience by getting out from behind the desk.
Q. What advice would you give to the next generation of engineers?
Jessica: Get out there – get in the field – study how things work and how to solve problems (the book doesn’t always have the answer!!). Someone who knows and understands the hands-on aspect of engineering makes for a great engineer.
