KSB, the world’s most experienced supplier of pumps and pump parts, promotes the Sewatec dry-installed solids handling pump. From wastewater and storm water transport to sludge treatment, the Sewatec pump is equipped to meet a multitude of needs. This pump’s unique and innovative design offers a variety of industry-leading advantages to wastewater plants interested in a flexible, reliable, and cost-effective way to handle their dirtiest jobs. Unique sealing technology The Sewatec pump’s flexible hydraulic design excels in a variety of conditions faced by wastewater facilities. Wastewater transport, wastewater treatment, sludge treatment, and storm water transport are a few of the pump’s possible applications. A remarkable trait of the Sewatec pump is its unique sealing technology that allows it to operate in a dry environment. Because the pump doesn’t require a source of clean water or the recirculation of pumped liquid to lubricate the pump seals, the pump can run dry without damage. To make this possible, Sewatec pumps are fitted with two independent mechanical seals with silicon carbide faces housed in an oversized oil chamber. These two mechanical seals ensure protection against failure, even during long periods of fluctuating conditions. In the event the first mechanical seal fails, the pump bearings are still protected by the second seal. This innovative design promotes a long, hassle-free operation life, low maintenance costs, and a level of reliability typical of the entire Sewatec line of pumps. One pump with many purposes Adding to the Sewatec pump’s versatility is its variety of impeller options and mounting methods. The Sewatec line offers several impeller types that make it a virtually “non-clog” pump. Choosing the right impeller for the job helps prevent the clogging, jamming, and locking that other pumps can be susceptible to. To handle all types of wastewater, KSB offers a choice of four impeller types, so treatment plants can target the best combination for their specific application: multi-vane K impeller, single-vane E impeller, free-flow (vortex) F impeller, or diagonal single-vane (screw) D impeller. Impellers are available in a variety of materials as well: cast iron, duplex stainless steel, or wear-resistant high chrome white iron. The supported installation types are equally flexible. These include horizontal or vertical closed coupled when the pump is dubbed Sewabloc and horizontal flexible coupled, vertical flexible coupled, and vertical with cardan shafts. These mounting options provide great flexibility during system installations and plant retrofit situations. (Customers should contact KSB for help selecting the best impeller and installation design for the job.) Other specifications are as follows: Discharge flanges meet ANSI standards; the pump line has a diameter range from 2 to 28 inches, a maximum flow rate of 44,000 gpm, heads up to 312 feet, and a maximum liquid temperature limit of 158 F; and clean-out openings in pump volute are standard starting at 4-inch pumps. High standards, low maintenance On top of being innovative and flexible, the Sewatec pump is also environmentally friendly in construction and use. The oversized oil chamber contains nontoxic paraffin oil, making the pump ecologically friendly as well as long lasting by providing reliable lubrication and cooling for the mechanical seals. Since this well-proven design does not require an external water source for seal flushing or cooling, the pump conserves clean water resources. The leak-proof design also helps prevent contamination from dirty liquids. Another benefit for the environment and the end user is the pump’s low-maintenance profile. Oil changes are recommended just every three years or 10,000 hours of operation (whichever comes first). Small/medium pumps are supplied with bearings greased for life, while larger units are fitted with bearings that can be externally regreased. The seals are equally easy to maintain: No external flushing is necessary, and pumps are supplied with non-proprietary mechanical seals (Burgmann) to keep maintenance costs manageable. Alternative seals with covered springs for abrasive liquids are also available for all pump models. Mechanical seals are mounted directly over a stainless steel shaft, which also contributes to a long, useful life of the pumps. Additionally, the Sewatec dry pump line is a derivative of the KRT line of submersible pumps (also available from KSB). Because the Sewatec’s impellers, bearings, mechanical seals, O-rings, and discharge covers are interchangeable with the KRT line, inventory streamlining is easy for customers that also use KRT wet well pumps.
