Fairbanks Morse Engine (FME), an EnPro Industries company, announced today the successful installation of an Enviro Design® exhaust treatment system at the municipal power plant in Two Harbors, Minnesota. The system ensures the plant will be in compliance with the Environmental Protection Agency’s recent RICE NESHAP emissions regulations.
The installed Fairbanks Morse Enviro Design exhaust treatment system consists of a diesel oxidation catalyst, a silencer with temperature and pressure monitor, and a crankcase ventilation system. These elements work in combination to reduce CO emissions from an Opposed Piston 38TDD8 1/8 engine (rated at 2880 hp @ 720 rpm) by 93% during diesel fuel operation, and by 95% when running on a dual fuel mix of natural gas and 5% diesel pilot. The mandated requirement for EPA compliance is a 70% reduction in CO emissions.

RICE NESHAP regulations require that stationary compression ignition engines must comply with CO emission reductions, and that stationary engines greater than 300 horsepower must also be equipped with a crankcase filtration system in order to reduce metallic HAP emissions. The ruling requires initial and continuing compliance that includes monitoring, data logging, and performance tests at specific intervals. The EPA deadline for compliance is May 2013.
