Our Industry Person of the Week is Balram Mallya, Segment Head for KSB SupremeServ (Aftermarket/Field Sales).
Q: How did you get started working in your field?
Balram: Before I started working in this field, I knew what it takes and accordingly prepared myself as a Design Engineer specialized in designing pumps and steam turbines. After which I got an opportunity to attend the interview at Kirloskar Ebara Pumps Limited (KEPL). I then went on to ask the Interviewer (Vice President of the company) to have me situates at their Pump Manufacturing shop floor to understand Pump Assembly and Machine Shop process. During this period, which later got extended to 2 years, I worked in all the departments such as, Production, Hydraulic Laboratory, Impeller & Rotor Balancing Department, API 611 & 612 Turbine Assembly, API 610 Centrifugal Pump Assembly department, Pump Repairs and Retrofit department and Engineering Department; before being asked to take over as Regional Sales and Service Manager (Assistant to Zonal Head). After working for 4 years I decided to move to KSB Limited, specialized in Boiler Feed Pumps as a Field Service Engineer. I was promoted directly to Segment Head – KSB SupremeServ (Aftermarket/Field Sales), Nuclear Department and KSB Mining (GIW Industries, Inc.) and have generated INR 150 Mi and INR 300 Million business for FY2019-2021 and FY2021- till present.
Q: What do you love the most about your job? What are you most proud of?
Balram: I love to provide solutions to client’s problems and find out problems at site, even which the end user is not aware of…
Q: What advice would you give to someone considering this line of work or new to the field?
Balram: Learn everything by yourself every single day and execute. Strive towards perfection. That’s the only way you can excel in your career.
Q: Can you talk about a project you recently worked on?
Balram: Lots and lots of Retrofit and Refurbishment projects including competitor’s equipment replacement, etc.
Q: Anything else you would like to add?
Balram: I believe the Service operations in India could be much much better for most of the OEMs…I want to work and live in US and other countries, meet new people especially whose first language is different than mine, and enjoy and give hope to the lives of people who don’t have much to offer…I want to be the ∆P…
