This week’s Industry Person of the Week is Curt Schad, President of Efkay Sales Markets and Represents.
Q: How did you get started working in your field?
Curt: I was a martial arts teacher and I injured my back and couldn’t do it full time anymore. I had a student and her father was a manufacturer’s rep and he was looking for a salesman. I worked for him for 3 1/2 years and traveled through Eastern Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland. I then moved on to another agency that was trying to merge with Efkay Sales and wasn’t working out. I offered to buy the agency in 1989, there were only 4 lines in the agency one of them was Liberty Pumps. I took the time to study pumps and network with Suppliers & Tradesman to get a deeper understanding of the sump, sewage, & drain pumps that Liberty offered. I worked for Liberty Pumps for 28 years and was one of the top 10 salesmen through that time. At the end of 2001 I was introduced to Davey Pumps. I was always fascinated with pressure boosting since I need one in my own house. Today we are a Master Distributor & Warranty Station for Davey with an office, warehouse & pump shop.
Q: What do you love the most about your job? What are you most proud of?
Curt: I enjoy the people in the plumbing industry and am proud that I was able to build an agency that specialized in pumps & pressure systems. We also do technical & customer service for Davey. I enjoy talking with mechanics, plumbers and homeowners to help them get what they want and to further their knowledge about their plumbing system.
Q: What advice would you give to someone considering this line of work or new to the field?
Curt: I’ve found in the plumbing industry if you want to be successful you need to know your product, follow through on your promises and return your phone calls.
