Pumps are complex and require engineering to make them perform efficiently and cost-effectively in a fluid system. Some sales people often try to quote pumps that require a minimal amount of engineering time in order to make the sale quickly. Often, short term gain for the salesperson means long-term pain for the customer.
Magnetic drive and seal-less pumps are often thought to be a “one size fits all” solution because they “promise” the widest range of guaranteed performance in one package. Seal-less pumps are usually sold at a higher list price than their more value leading but complex counterparts. The important point here is that your sales and support rep should always be addressing more than just the acquisition costs – they must also speak with you about operating efficiencies and service life – which are hidden cost factors that are part of the total cost of pump ownership.
It’s important that your sales rep is solution-focused and customer-centric. They should be evaluating the different options that solve your pumping needs. In doing so, they are providing you with a true value-added service, rather than just providing a product.
When purchasing a pump, whether it needs to be a seal-less pump or not, always think long term. Have the investment mindset. Compare acquisition costs with operating and repair costs for each alternative, and most importantly, work with people you trust!
