In 2017, Empowering Pumps & Equipment began inviting people to nominate an industry professional, giving our #PumpTalk Community a chance to shine a light on the PEOPLE behind the pumps and pumping systems. Meet Ernesto Enrique Primera, a man of many talents serving as a Senior Machinery Reliability Engineer at Chevron, an Hydraulic Institute Industry Partner & Instructor, and an ASME Global Instructor with the ASME Speakers Bureau.
Q: How did you get started in the pump industry?
Ernesto: I began my career with TEXACO in Venezuela 19 years ago. My job was Rotating Equipment Inspector and I was involved in Engineering, Installation, Commissioning and Start-Up of several pumping systems (Centrifugal and Positive Displacement) for Orinoco River, the major Oil Resource of the World. At this time I visited several Pump Vendor facilities in USA, Canada, and Germany, and I realized the opportunities available in this field. Some years later I began to work with FLOWSERVE PUMPS Company and I learned a lot about the Pump world. I discovered more about standards like API, ASTM, and ASME. In 2005, I tried to be part of the standard committee and I discovered opportunities with professional sections and Global Instructions. I was successful in 2006, and now I have been part of the approved Global Instructor in pump maintenance & reliability through ASME.
Q: What is your favorite part of your job? What do you love about it?
Ernesto: I’m part of the wonderful team in Chevron Downstream & Chemical, and I loved working together to solve problems pertaining to Machinery Trains using powerful tools to simulate Rotodynamic, Thermodynamic and Fluodynamic behavior. Through this, we can identify action items needed for solutions. I love working with people who focus on Team Work, and have high level of professionalism. My activities with ASME include travels across the Spanish speaking countries, teaching professionals about pump maintenance and reliability. I love participating in conferences and creating networks around the world.
Q: What advice would you give to a person new to or just entering the industry?
Ernesto: Don’t be afraid to get involved in professional societies and institutes like ASME and the Hydraulic Institute. Read industry magazines, articles, and participate in events like symposiums about Pumping Systems to discover the opportunities available in this area.
