Empowering Pumps & Equipment is happy to see so many industry professionals nominate their fellow peers, to help shine a light on the PEOPLE behind the pumps! Today’s Pump Person of the Week is Katie Bailey, Application Engineer with Weir Specialty Pumps, and this is what she had to share!
Q. How did you get started working in the industry?
Katie: After I moved to Utah, I took a position as an Industrial Applications Engineer at Weir Specialty Pumps. I switched to the Municipal side of the business after a couple of years.
Q. What is your favorite part of your job? What are you most proud of?
Katie: As an Applications Engineer, I love collaborating with my colleagues, building relationships with our customers, learning the ‘ins’ and ‘outs’ of our equipment, and coming up with solutions for tricky applications.
Q: What advice would you give to someone new to the industry?
Katie: There is so much to learn in the industry! Be patient with yourself and gather as much information as you can from wherever and whomever you can. Don’t be afraid to innovate and take risks when necessary.
Q. Why did you become an engineer?
Katie: Growing up, I loved fixing problems and learning how things work. My best subjects were always math and science. Choosing engineering was a natural and easy choice. I never considered doing anything else!
Q: What is it like working in a field that is typically male-dominated?
Katie: As a female engineer, it can be challenging, as it is sometimes difficult to relate to certain gender-specific experiences. While I’ve never had trouble fitting in with “the guys”, I do hope that in the future there’s an ‘even spread’ of males and females in engineering and other male-heavy professions.
