Weekly Clogging Issues Eliminated by Barnes Sithe Submersible Chopper Pump

Barnes Sithe submersible chopper pump eliminates weekly clogging issues at Southwest Licking County’s lift station in Pataskala, Ohio.

Southwest Licking County is a rural water and wastewater district that covers about 100 square miles. Sewage from several other lift stations as well as a local residential trailer park feed into this main lift station in Pataskala, Ohio. The sewage is then pumped to the wastewater treatment plant, which is designed to handle 2.5 million gallons of wastewater per day.

T-shirts, mop heads, ropes, rags and undergarments had been consistently clogging the “non-clog” pumps at the station. Matt Pennington, Collections System Supervisor, and his team of three maintenance personnel would make weekly site visits to the station to unclog the pump.

Excel Fluid Group Inc., a Crane Pumps and Systems’ channel partner, teamed up with Pennington to find a solution. With the intention to chop up the large solids, they settled on the Barnes Sithe 10 HP submersible chopper pump from Crane Pumps and Systems.

The installation was straightforward and no modifications were required to the station or the control panel. The slotted discharge flange allowed the pump to be installed with existing guide rail fittng. The ‘plug-n-play’ cord made the installation quicker.

Equipped with hardened and heat treated cutting blades (shown above), the Sithe has been chopping and pumping away the solids since June 2017 with zero downtime and without any need for a service call.

“Sithe has definitely led to cost savings in man-hours, equipment cost and fuel cost from not having to come out and pull the pump to remove clogs,” states Pennington.
