For the past couple years, Empowering Pumps has been inviting people to Nominate an Industry Professional, and today’s Person of the Week is Nadine Tribur, P.E., leading the Instrument/Electrical Department with S & B Engineers and Constructors, Ltd.
Q. How did you get started working in your field?
Nadine: Originally, I had gone to college with the intent to develop computer hardware. Although I was able to complete the coursework, I really did not have the aptitude or interest for that area of engineering. I changed my major to electrical engineering. Prior to graduation I had developed a small network of contacts in the oil and gas industry, and I called on one of them. He offered me a job in instrumentation and control systems. It’s not a field I was familiar with, but I was willing to ‘give it a go’ and learn as much as I could.
Q. What do you love the most about your job? What are you most proud of?
Nadine: I love to learn! Instrumentation and controls is always changing, and therefore, challenging. It never stagnates. This discipline has provided me the opportunity to work with some of the brightest people in the industry. I am most proud that I get to lead a group of 170 instrument, electrical, and controls engineers and designers to develop solutions for our clients.
Q. What advice would you give to someone considering this line of work or new to the field?
Nadine: I advise new graduates to be open minded and not to be afraid to jump into a new field. There are people to help guide you along the way, and even though it can be tough, it’s also a lot of fun! Additionally, don’t dismiss small tasks that seem mundane. All tasks are important and have a reason for being done.
Q. Can you talk about a project you recently worked on?
Nadine: I had the opportunity to lead the IE teams on a large gas Fractionation Plant and Propane / Butane export facility. These projects really opened my eyes as to the amount of interdisciplinary coordination and front end work that is required to build a large facility on time and on budget.
