Industry Person of the Week – Tanya Hewitt

This week’s Industry Person of the Week is Tanya Hewitt, founder and CEO of Beyond Safety Compliance.

Q: How did you get started working in your field?

Tanya: Assuming we are talking about starting my own company, it was initiated by realizing I was a poor fit at my previous workplace, and that I could help organizations to be healthier overall, more fulfilling for the people in and who interface with the organization.

Q: What do you love the most about your job? What are you most proud of?

Tanya: I love meeting new people, great discussions and constant learning. I am proud that many people got value from a series I ran on Let’s Take a Look at Work – made new connections, learned some material, and left some encouraging testimonials.

Q: What advice would you give to someone considering this line of work or new to the field?

Tanya: I am still early in my entrepreneurial journey, so the best advice I could give is to connect with others, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. It’s not an easy path, and you need to acknowledge the importance of others in your circles.

Q: Can you talk about a project you recently worked on?

Tanya: I might refer to a recent experience in my volunteering role – the organization did not have membership for many years, did not have an executive to discuss activities or the daunting task of re-establishing membership. Although I resisted taking on the role of chair (due to my lack of subject matter expertise), I have had an executive team, enabled credit card and e-transfer payments to complement the tradition cheque payment, established a mechanism to easily email and send calendar invites, and changed the traditional meeting from a presenter, Q&A, chapter affairs to chapter affairs, presenter, Zoom break out rooms, Q&A. I also wrote a miniature literature review to help with an initiative proposed to the chapters.

Q: Anything Else you would like to add?

Tanya: I have benefitted from many webinars, many break out rooms, and many new connections. I have been invited to contribute to book chapters, to partner with webinars – all of which were unplanned, and came about due to my interactions with others. It is important to see what might not be immediately visible.
