Lunch & Learn with Vince: Compression Heat Recovery with TECO-Westinghouse

Join us for an ongoing series where Vince, Empowering Pump’s Director of Business Development, brings on guests to teach him technical skills useful for those working in the pump and related equipment industry.

In this episode, Vince talks to Dean Sarandria, Director of the Custom Products, Service and Green Energy Groups at TECO-Westinghouse in Round Rock, Texas. He has a Chemical Engineering Degree and has worked for Westinghouse for 43 years.

The compression of gas results in heat that is currently removed with electric motor-driven fans and vented to the atmosphere. TECO-Westinghouse and AG Equipment designed a highly efficient, green patented process to capture this heat and turn it into electric power, The system uses the Rankin Cycle with propane or similar gas to drive a turbo expander connected to a high-speed generator and regenerative drive. What makes the system work economically is the use of a 500 Hz generator and Sic Mosfit drive developed under a DOE program with Clemson University. The system at 1 MW can save 8 million lbs of CO2 per year.

Topics covered include:

  • Green, CO2 saved, heat recovery, SiC,
  • Inspiration behind HRS – How it was created; Why its effective
  • Technical components
  • Organic Rankine Cycle technology
  • Green Energy and carbon reduction
  • Applications/industries
