What is a Pen-Seal & How to Use the Pen-Seal Calculator

Contributor: Mike Lassas

Whenever piping runs through walls, floors, tanks, ceilings, and/or vaults, Proco’s PEN-SEAL Pipe Penetration Seal design assists in achieving an efficient, low-cost mechanical gas or watertight seal between any electrical conduit, concrete, cast iron, stainless steel, carbon steel, ductile iron, copper, PVC/CPVC pipes, and other common pipe materials of all sizes.

Where expandable foams and caulks are utilized, they constantly will have to be re-applied in order to maintain the seal. However, the PEN-SEAL provides a permanent solution to sealing these annular spaces and saving you valuable time and money on costly maintenance.

The PEN-SEAL, while being used to seal the gap in electrical conduit lines, will also act as an insulator. The unique design of the PEN-SEAL helps to provide a gas and watertight seal, filling any space around a round pipe. All sizes have been tested to withstand a hydrostatic seal up to 20 psig or 40 feet of head pressure in addition to withstanding temperatures up to 250° F.

PEN-SEAL’s standard elastomer material is EPDM, which is suitable for temperatures ranging from -40° F to 250° F. EPDM is suitable for most applications in water—above ground and direct burial—and will provide the electrical insulation where cathodic protection is required. Silicone material is also available for higher temperature applications up to 400° F.

Where the PEN-SEAL may come in contact with hydrocarbons, oil, gas, jet fuel, and miscellaneous solvents, a nitrile material is available with temperatures ranging from -40° F to 210° F.

The PEN-SEAL utilizes glass-reinforced plastic for the pressure plates and all hardware is manufactured from steel zinc dichromate. For corrosion resistance, 316 Stainless Steel hardware is also available.

The new Proco PEN-SEAL calculator is a new tool designed to assist in selecting the correct number of links and the correct size of link for pipe penetrations passing through walls and/or floors. It’s simple to use. Just enter your Pipe O.D. dimension and your Penetration ID and you’ll receive the required combination to ensure a 100% water-tight seal.

The tool is downloadable on the appropriate platform for any device by following this link. You can also check out the Proco Pipe Penetration Seal Installation Video which demonstrates how to properly install Pen-Seals in your piping system!
